David Josue: This image came from one of my favorite weddings of 2009. It took place at the old Plaza de Toros in Zacatecas, Mexico. The dance floor was lit by the DJ using robotic lights and spotlights following the two dancing couples (the couple in the background is the groom and his mom). Those lights are the only ones creating light in this photograph, I have always enjoyed dramatic lighting, a little film noir type. What l like the most about this shot is the dad’s expression; his smile, with this lighting, has a strength that contrasts with the tender smile of his daughter.
This couple had absolute trust in my style and vision. It was very enjoyable working with them and I was able to expand my comfort zone. I think this is one of the weddings where I took the most chances and produced more daring images. I recommend that more photographers step out of their comfort zone; especially when the couple has given them the opportunity.
The camera was a Nikon D700 with a 24-70 2.8 lens at 35mm f/2.8 at 1/125 sec on ISO 8oo. Manual mode.
Sergio: One of the most emotional scenes at most weddings is the father/daughter dance. This is a time when most photographers know that there is a very high chance of good emotional expressions. Regardless of how reserved some dads can be; at this moment they give it all up. Therefore, most photographers try to cover their bases my lighting up the dance with their own strobes to maximize the chances of getting the shot. David Josue, on the other hand, threw himself at the mercy of lighting that was not under his control. He decided to go for something different and it paid off. There is no need to have their faces fully lit to see the amazing expressions captured in a more interesting way.
Huy: Parents being happy and loving for their children (the married couple) are what I look for during these dances. To me, the lighting is very secondary to the people’s expressions and the mood of the image. David got it all : happy dad with beautiful lighting. Fantastic!
