Ed: This is definitely one of my faves from 2009! This moment took place right after the cake cutting, when the bride and groom give an obligatory kiss to all the onlooking guests. I had noticed these party dudes earlier and they were hooting and hollering and just having a great time throughout the day. So during the cake cutting I figured they’d do something cool and positioned myself to get them and the couple in frame and waited for a moment. The photography gods took pity on me and handed me this keeper.
By the way, it helps having a solid shooter by your side to pick up the standard shot of the couple kissing after the cake cutting. Otherwise I probably would have stayed with the safe shot and not gone after the reaction shots. There are different philosophies on using a second shooter. One school of thought is not relying on them at all and shoot a wedding like you’re the only shooter. That’s fine for when you don’t know the capabilities of your second shooter. However, to use a baseball analogy, if you have a regular second why not use your second shooter as your lead off hitter and get the safe shot? Meanwhile, you make yourself the team’s cleanup hitter or slugger and swing for the fences. You’re more likely to hit ‘em out of the ballpark!
Sergio: What I love about this cake cutting shot is that it does not look like a cake cutting shot. Ed looked beyond the obvious masterfully capturing what most of us tend to overlook. Very inspirational. And I love his baseball analogy!
